My Mirror is Broken

My vanity table has been around for years but I love it. It has a Victorian look with rich, dark wood and I enjoy sitting down to it to do my hair and makeup in the morning. It definitely shows some wear with a few scratches here and there, but it’s got character.
But the one thing you will notice as soon as you open the top is that my mirror is broken. The mirror is square and plain, nothing fancy. A few years ago, a hairline crack developed just below the top corner, maybe from shutting it too forcefully or just from age. Over time the crack has grown until it runs diagonally all the way down toward the bottom.
When it first happened, I went shopping for a replacement but they were either too thick since mine is quite thin or the dimensions were slightly off. Then life continued moving forward and I got used to it. I hardly notice it most of the time. I just adjust my sitting position to work around it. If my image is filtered directly through the split I might appear to have one eye or… three or maybe no chin.
But that’s the thing. How many of us look through our broken mirrors at life and try to navigate the uncertainties without an accurate guide? It makes us falter and fall when we can’t see where we are going because we are wandering around in the dark. How can we see? If I can see only one “eye” because of my broken mirror of feelings then how am I supposed to care for the other “eye”?
Happily, there is a guide that can accurately lead us through the brokenness of this life. His name is Jesus and He gave us a guidebook which is the Bible. Because of Jesus we don’t have to look at life through the broken mirror of our feelings or through the opinions of others, who are also looking at life through their own broken mirror.
James 1:23, 24 NASB
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.
We can’t trust our feelings to be our guide. They waver back and forth with the events of the day or even the hour many times. When I need guidance or comfort, I go to the Bible for help. Inside its pages lie so many reminders of my savior’s love for me. Even when I can’t see the outcome up ahead (which is most of the time), I still know that God is carrying me and guiding me.
Even when the road is hard and I don’t want to walk down it, I know that I am in His loving hands and that no matter what circumstances I find myself in, God knows and He is here with me to help me grow through the pain to be more like Jesus.
Life is hard sometimes and when I look through my broken mirror and forget what the Lord says about me and to me, I fall down. But, He is there waiting to show me the clear path out of my mess through the wisdom found in the pages of the Bible.
My hope is that you will find that guidance through knowing Christ personally. He wants to have a relationship with you and transform you from a mess to a masterpiece. In the 23rd Psalm in verse 3, we are reminded that God guides us. He restores my soul; He guides me in the path of righteousness For His name’s sake. NASB
We can find every help that we need to navigate our way through this life in the pages of Scripture. Let’s take this journey together.
