In II Timothy 3:16,17 NASB the Bible says that "All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."
Years ago a visiting preacher used to come to my church often and without fail, every time he came across the word "All" in the scripture he would point out that "All means All and that's All that All means." It was a catchy phrase and a good reminder. God never lies. His word, ALL of it, is for our good. Even the genealogies and lists in the Old Testament that can seem tedious have an eternal benefit and are there to teach and instruct us.
I heard the account of a man who brought his friend to church one Sunday hoping that he would be touched and saved by the sermon. As the pastor began to preach, his disappointment grew. Instead of what the gentleman considered to be a strong, convicting and moving sermon, the pastor read a long list of genealogies. At the close of the message the altar call was given and to his great surprise his friend went forward. Later, he asked what had prompted him and his friend told him that as the pastor read the details of each man's lineage he realized his own mortality. Each one read 'such and such a person had a certain number of sons and lived a certain number of years and he died.' As the list was read over and over again, he heard the words... "and he died". He had been convicted of His need for Christ because of a simple reminder that none of us are promised tomorrow.
The word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword; and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12.
Be encouraged that all of God's word is there to teach us, to help us grow, to encourage us and to reach the lost. We can take God at His word that all scripture is beneficial and as we spend time with the Lord in prayer and Bible study that we are being trained in godliness and holiness as we allow the Lord to transform us into His image. No time spent with His word is ever wasted if we have a heart that wants to know Him more. Spend time getting to know Jesus. We do that through the inspired word of God, the Bible. That is literally His message to us for everything that we need. Everything! There is no trouble that we go through that He cannot help us and direct us. Get to know Him through those pages and in so doing, He will bring peace in the middle of the worst storm. Isaiah 26:3
